I
cannot stress this enough, do not do anything without having
adequate current virus protection. Most computers came
preloaded with a virus protection program installed. This is
generally only a free trial and will require you to go online to
purchase a subscription when the trial period runs out. This may
be in as little as 90 days or 6 months. I do not recommend this.
If you like a certain anti-virus program, go to a store like
Best Buy and purchase the program on a disk (CD). That way if
you have to re-install the program for any reason, you have the
program. The most widely used and
most reliable anti-virus programs are Norton's and McAfee. You
mast also update your virus protection regularly to make sure
you have the latest virus definitions. This will keep your
computer up-to-date with the latest protection against viruses,
trojan horses and worms.
Some internet service providers also provide an anti-virus
program for free. Comcast and Verizon do this, but if you have
questions, contact your internet service provider. (ISP)
Now the good news; there is a FREE reliable anti-virus program
called AVAST.
I use it on my spare computer and have had no problems for
nearly a year. It is also self updating so you don't have to
worry about having current virus definitions. Get
it HERE! You can also check
your computer for viruses and malware with a free service from
Microsoft at Safety.Live.Com.
Choose the "Full Service Scan". Some infections
require that you run the above scan in "Safe Mode". To
get in safe mode, do a restart on your computer, and tap on the
F8 key during restart. When you get the black screen, use your
arrow keys to navigate down to "Safe Mode With
Networking", then hit the enter key. Choose your operating
service, then hit the enter key again. Do not panic, it will
look different. Log onto the internet and navigate to Safety.Live.Com
and follow the instructions. My virus
